What's a Favicon?

What's a Favicon and Why Does Your Website Need One?

You know that tiny icon that sits next to a website's name on your browser tab? That's a favicon. It also shows up in bookmarks and next to your site in Google search results. It's one of the smallest pieces of your branding, and one of the easiest to overlook.

Here's why it deserves five minutes of your attention.

Small Icon, Big Trust Signal

Research on website credibility has shown that visitors tend to trust sites with a favicon more than sites without one. When you skip it, your browser tab shows a generic blank document icon. Now picture your tab sitting right next to a competitor's tab with a clean, branded icon. Which business looks more established?

Favicons also help people find you again. When someone bookmarks your site, that little icon is often what they recognize first when they scroll back through their saved links. And honestly, a finished favicon sends a quiet message: this business pays attention to details.

What Happens If You Don't Set One?

Your website platform will pick something for you, and it usually isn't pretty. Depending on your host, you might get a blank box, a generic globe, or the platform's own logo instead of yours. Your website should be working for your brand on every screen, right down to the browser tab.

How to Create One

A favicon is just an image file. You can make one in Canva, Adobe Illustrator, or whatever design tool you're comfortable with. A few guidelines to keep it looking sharp:

  • Size: Create your image somewhere between 100px x 100px and 300px x 300px. Browsers will shrink it down to about 16px x 16px on the tab, so starting with a clean, high-resolution square keeps it from getting fuzzy.

  • File type: Save it as a .png or .ico file.

  • File size: Keep it under 100 KB.

  • Keep it simple: This is the big one. Most full logos are unreadable at tab size. If your logo has words in it, don't force it. Pull out one strong element instead, like a single letter, a symbol, or a shape in your brand colors. Simple wins every time at 16 pixels.

Where to Upload It

  • Squarespace: Design settings, under Logo & Site Title

  • WordPress: Admin Panel, under Site Identity

  • GoHighLevel and most other builders: Look for the site settings or general settings area of your site editor

Not sure where yours goes? Send us a message and we'll point you to it, or handle it for you.

The Bottom Line

Every small branding detail either builds trust or chips away at it. Take ten seconds right now and look at your own browser tab. If you see a blank icon, or a squished version of your logo that nobody could read, it's time for an upgrade.

Keep making a great first impression!
